For this session, we look at one of America’s most storied cities. A place of warring vice and virtue? The place where dreams are made, or come to die? This cradle of celebrity and sun-kissed beaches has a troubled history. From the opening of American revisionist utopia Disneyland in 1955 to Rodney King’s brutal assualt by the LAPD and the race riots of the 90s, Los Angeles is a veritable melting pot of American culture, excess, and conflicting demographics.
Mike Davis’ except from City of Quarts looks at the contradictions of the city and its many faces. Here, he wrestles with the mythology of L.A and its discontents.
Stefanie Schneider’s oneiric photography, uniquely taken on expired Polaroid film stock, privileges the female form in an oeuvre that explores hedonism, sexuality, and excess.
