This session we will tackle the titanic monster of Hollywood and, specifically, the Blockbuster. Often cited as beginning with the release of Jaws (1975), and very much a staple of Western cinema in our contemporary moment, the Blockbuster is an integral part of cinematic production and consumption. All roads lead to Hollywood.
In Martin Scorsese’s much-discussed recent op-ed in the New York Times, he discusses his comments regarding Disney/Marvel’s cinematic monopoly and what it means for a film to constitute ‘cinema’. What do these terms mean, and are they mutually exclusive? Who is eligible to define each term, and why?
In Noel King’s piece, he explores the New Hollywood coterie and the true launch of the Blockbuster alongside some of cinema’s most iconic titles. Spielberg, Coppola, Scorsese, to name but three, are central to his study of New Hollywood and its antecedents.
